What is UCR registration?
UCR stands for Unified Carrier Registration. Businesses covered by the program register each year through their base state and pay a fee. Those fees help fund state enforcement.
It is separate from your operating authority and separate from your quarterly IFTA filings. There is no UCR sticker or credential to carry in the truck, which is part of why it gets missed.
Who has to register for UCR?
If your business operates commercial vehicles in interstate commerce, you generally need to register. UCR also covers brokers, freight forwarders and leasing companies, including businesses that do not own trucks.
Not sure whether it applies to you? Start with UCR's Do I Need to Register wizard.
How much does UCR cost in 2027?
Fees are tiered by how many commercial motor vehicles you operate.
| Vehicles | 2026 fee | 2027 fee |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | $46 | $55 |
| 3 to 5 | $138 | $167 |
| 6 to 20 | $276 | $333 |
| 21 to 100 | $963 | $1,163 |
| 101 to 1,000 | $4,592 | $5,548 |
For carriers in the 0 to 2 vehicle bracket, the 2027 fee is $55, up from $46 in 2026. Brokers and leasing companies with no vehicles fall in that same bottom bracket.
Fleets over 1,000 vehicles have their own bracket, listed on UCR's fee page. That page is also where to confirm current fees if you are reading this after 2027.
How to file your UCR registration
Registration for 2027 opened October 1, 2026.
Complete your registration and payment before January 1, 2027.
Start at the official registration site, ucr.gov. Have your USDOT number and fleet information ready.
Check these details before you submit
- Your vehicle count, which is the commercial motor vehicles you operate. Worth double checking if your fleet changed at any point during the year.
- Your base state, normally where the business is principally based. If you have moved, confirm it before you file.
- Auto-renew, if remembering this every year is the actual problem. UCR's program handles the registration and emails you ahead of the renewal.
What happens if you miss the UCR deadline?
Missing it happens, and it is fixable.
The fee does not go away. You still owe it, and until it is paid you are carrying the risk of state enforcement. Failure to pay UCR fees gets documented at roadside under FMCSA code 392.2, which is how plenty of people find out they are behind.
Getting square is the same process as filing on time. Go to ucr.gov and complete it.

What else is due in January
Since you are in here anyway, it is a good moment to look at what else the business has coming up. Depending on how you operate, that might be:
What else may be coming due
Write down each one, when it is due, and what you expect it to cost.
- Your fourth quarter IFTA filing and any balance due. That period covers October through December, with the return due January 31.
- An insurance renewal, if yours falls in the first quarter. Our insurance renewal guide has the questions worth asking.
- Estimated tax payments, if you pay them. Amounts and dates are a conversation with your accountant.
- State registration and permit renewals, which vary by state and by what you haul.
If you do not know an amount yet, note what you need to confirm and who to ask. For a broader look at operating expenses, see our guide to truck cost per mile.
With those numbers together, it is easier to see what you will need to set aside from upcoming deposits. You can run them through TACH's revenue calculator if that helps.
Three things and you are done
- Check whether UCR applies to your business.
- Find your bracket and file before January 1.
- Save the confirmation with your records.
And if you would rather not think about it again next year, turn on auto-renew while you are in there.
